BALANCE GAME : discovering the thoughts of future foreign entrepreneurs

hero

On April 29th, we had the pleasure of holding a seminar explaining the Startup For All (모두의창업) program organised by the Korean government and the key criteria and winning strategies for the competition.

In order to know more about the contestant’s mindset and points of view, we organised a little balance game by asking them some burning work-related questions !

Rules of the balance game are simple : after picking a this-or-that question in the box, guests choose what they would rather prefer between the two proposals by explaining their choice.

Here is a summary of what they conveyed to us.

Raise funding and start big

VS

Start small with your own money

Esthée :

Raise funding and start big

Esthée explained that investing for the future is the key for successful company raising.

Ambition and patience, these are what an entrepreneur needs before starting a business. Understanding the market, your needs and defining a good timing is very important. What can seems like a surprising answer actually reveals that for Esthée, starting a business first means that you have to be ready, that you have to build strong basis to expect entering a particular market.

In the end, what can prevent you from being big if you’ve already started as a big company ?

Founder does sales directly

VS

Hire someone great at sales

Fatih :

It depends

img

« If you can’t sell it yourself from the beginning, I don’t think you can expect someone to sell it later »

— Fatih

In Fatih's opinion, this decision should be answered by considering that there is two periods in the company building process : the development and the maintenance of the company’s activity.

Knowing your own x-objectives and the image you want to project to your customers is essential. Fatih thinks — at least in the beginning — that taking care of the sales is very important. When the company is safely settled, hiring a founder should be considered. By taking care of the sales first, it will be easy for the founder to answer to your expectations as the CEO of the company.

You have to define your own perspective first to explain it to a third party.

A teammate who is great but hard to work with

VS

A teammate who is average but easy to work with

Sumedha :

A teammate who is easy to work with

Sumedha gave her thoughts about the importance of communication and complementarity while working with another body.

As long as everybody is specialised in a specific area, everyone can contribute efficiently in the company. The point of working together lies in the fact that you don’t have to be perfect for being part of a team because someone else’s skills might be the one you don’t have.

Thus, being average is not a problem itself. However, communication can not be dismissed. A good team should communicate efficiently and comfortably. This is why Sumedha would better choose to rely on a teammate who is easy to work with.

Register your company yourself

VS

Let a professional handle it

img

This is the kind of question that is complicated to answer with a cartesian approach. All of our guests gave us nuanced answers.

Although they are all aware that registering a company in another country (in this case Korea) requires some strong basis regarding administration system, language and research method, they explained that being completely substituted by a professional can lead to uncertainty. They conveyed how much it is important of being autonomous and relatively independent while raising a company.

« Autonomy matters in a solo business. »

— Sumedha

« Helping, guiding but not doing for me. »

— Esthée
