A Small Name Mistake Can Cause Big Delays

While residing long-term in South Korea, foreigners need to apply for an Alien Registration Certificate (ARC) card, also known as the 외국인등록증. This is basically your legal ID while living in Korea.

Problems arises when you have registered different spelling, sequence or parts of your name across different institutions, apps or platforms.

Why Should You Always Use the Name Registered on Your ARC?

John came to Korea to work under a E7 visa. When he first applied for an ARC card, he wrote his legal name (same as passport) on the visa application form.

Official legal name: JOHN EDWARD SMITH

However, he filled his name in differently for other applications.

Mobile phone registration: John Smith

Rental lease: John Ed Smith

Bank account: SMITH JOHN EDWARD

At the clinic where they performed his employment health check up, the staff entered his name in Hangul as 존 스미스, due to limitations of the computer system.

Guess what happened a month later?

John could no longer verify his identity on mobile apps or register his place of residence. Worse, he struggled to retrieve overseas funds sent to his Korean bank account. Even his health report might not be recognized.

The reason: His name was spelled in a way that did not match the legal name on his ARC card.

While it may not be as strict overseas about the spelling of a name, Korean administrative systems often have separate servers and databases. The systems do not talk to each other. They can only identify a foreigner when the Legal Name matches the ARC Registration Number.

Pro-Tip:

Most Korean facilities are designed with local residents in mind, so administrative staff are used to entering names in Hangul (Korean characters). Always ask them to register you using your legal name in English, exactly as it appears on your ARC. Make sure the spelling, capitalization, and spacing all match.

The devil is in the details. Don't let a simple spelling mistake derail your journey.
